Electricity
Under the Electricity Act, the New Brunswick Energy and Utilities Board regulates the rates charged by NB Power, the provincially-owned electric utility.
During 2013, the Legislature passed the latest Electricity Act. Under the latest legislation the Board’s mandate expanded to include the generation of electricity, and capital projects of more than $50 million must also be approved by the Board. Since 2015, the utility is required to apply to the Board annually for approval of rates.
The restructuring also eliminated the New Brunswick System Operator as a separate entity as of October 1, 2013. The majority of the operations of the system operator were folded back into NB Power operations. The system operator’s role ensuring that reliability standards are followed was transferred to the Board. |
